Ange is one strong Mama.
When she walked into the hotel for her Boudoir session, she immediately seemed to be very reserved, but self assured. As we chatted about her life and got to know each other during hair and makeup, I realized that she is a total powerhouse. A single mother, she is grateful for so many things in her life. It was inspiring just ta talk to her. Gratitude is an attitude that we all could really do with more of. I am 100% sure of that.
Initially, I wanted to shoot Ange’s boudoir at night because I wanted to experiment with the ambient light that spills in from George Street and Water Street. But as we chatted, Ange told me about how her passion is actually aerial yoga. As soon as we began shooting, I realized that doing her boudoir at night and using just ambient light was perfect because it allowed me to highlight exactly how strong her body is. The strong shadows actually emphasized her muscular build.
What I did not realize was the fact that her entire life, she had been bothered by the same muscular body that I was excited to celebrate with her.
“I am 40 and muscular and a bit of a plain Jane when it comes to make up and hair so, naturally I was a little apprehensive about the whole experience before my photo shoot with Amy.
I had some silly notions that I would be painted and posed and presented in a way that would look amazing… yes but, not like me at all. Meghan (Amy’s make up artist) began by asking if I wore make up regularly and finished the whole process moments later with a smile and “that’s all she really needs”
Amy began by asking me to show her my strong arms, arms that I’ve been told make me look like a man for as long as I have developed them.
By the end of the process, I felt light and lovely. I left smiling and I even took a selfie when I arrived at home. When I reviewed the finished product most of the photos highlighted the face and muscular form I had feared would be hidden and they make the parts of me I had been shamed for seem like assets and I cried with happiness. Amy could not have known how I hide my arms in hoodies and long sleeves. She just thought they were beautiful and it made all the difference in the world to me”

Ange, thank you so much for allowing us to photograph you.
I am overjoyed that photographing your amazing strength and flexibility helped you to see yourself in a new light. I always say that boudoir photos aren’t about being ‘sexy’ or about giving as a gift to someone else. They are about embracing and celebrating your own unique beauty. You certainly embraced the spirit of boudoir Ange – I hope you always love your images.
Much Love,
Amy
